Li Appointed Director of Research and Graduate Studies

Professor Olive Li

The Huntley College of Agriculture has a new director of research and graduate studies.

Olive Li, an associate professor in the Department of Human Nutrition & Food Science, will assume the director’s role, effective March 26.

“The college is looking forward to Olive Li’s leadership in this role,” said Lisa Kessler, interim dean of the Huntley College of Agriculture. “Olive brings a positive attitude and innovative ideas for networking and generating extramural funding for research.”

Li takes the place of Professor Harmit Singh, who was recently appointed as the Department of Human Nutrition & Food Science’s chair.

The director of graduate and research studies roles include:

  • providing oversight of the college’s Graduate Committee and Research Committee and serving on the Curriculum Committee.
  • leading the Graduate Committee in developing policies and procedures for graduate admissions and graduate orientation and advising.
  • overseeing the development and processing of curriculum documents
  • working to generate extramural funding to support research activities.

Li started as an assistant professor in the Department of Human Nutrition & Food Science at Cal Poly Pomona in September 2011. She was promoted to associate professor last September.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in food science and technology from Dalian Polytechnic University in China; her master’s degree in biochemical engineering from Dalian University of Technology in China; and her master’s degree and a doctorate in chemical/food engineering from the University of Toronto in Canada.

Prior to coming to Cal Poly Pomona, she was a graduate research fellow, teaching assistant, lecturer and post-doctoral fellow at the University of Toronto, and then assistant professor at Tennessee State University.

Among her active professional affiliations, Li is a member of the International Society of Food Engineering, the International Bionencapsulation Group, and the president-elect of the Southern California Institute of Food Technologists Section.
