Petting farm animals. Arabian horses. Veterinary demonstrations. Free food samples. Bargain prices on new plant varieties.
The Huntley College of Agriculture will have all this and more on Homecoming Saturday on the weekend of March 3 and 4.
First off, the college will have its annual Ag Open House from 9 a.m. to noon in Building 2. Although the event is primarily intended for prospective students, it is also open to the public. Visitors can see classrooms and labs, meet faculty and students, learn about academic programs, tour the campus and residence halls, and witness special demonstrations.
Meanwhile, the AGRIscapes Center will have a buzz of activity that day.
The Cal Poly Pomona Farm Store will hold its annual “Taste of the Farm Store” event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can enjoy free samples of produce grown by Cal Poly Pomona students, fresh-squeezed orange juice, chips and salsa, crackers and dips, cheeses and jams, and sparkling drinks and juices.
Saturday is also the opening day this year for the Cal Poly Pomona Petting Farm at AGRIscapes. Guests can visit the animals – miniature horses, goats, sheep, rabbits, a dairy calf, and small-breed pigs – from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is $4 per person, and food cups are $1 each.
For the green thumbs, AGRIscapes will hold a blowout springtime plant sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring premium garden plants for 50 percent off what they would normally retail for. The plants are donated from a garden plant breeders’ industry showcase that AGRIscapes is hosting. They are display plants and are the best of the best that producers have to offer. It will be a great place to find something to add to your garden or landscaping this spring.
On Sunday, students will put on the monthly Sunday Horse Show at the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center. The Arabian horse shows are a tradition started by breakfast cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg in 1926 to promote the Arabian breed on his winter ranch, which became the Cal Poly Pomona campus.
The shows include a four-horse quadrille routine by the Arabian Mounted Drill Team, a trick horse act, and presentations in Native Costume under both English and Western tack in Ladies Side Saddle.
