A team of Cal Poly Pomona students finished seventh at the annual national Turf Bowl competition.
The Cal Poly Pomona team finished behind teams from Auburn University, Purdue, Penn State, the University of Maryland, and Iowa State, but ahead of teams from Olds College, Michigan State, Purdue
The Turf Bowl competition, which was held Feb. 8 in San Antonio, Texas, features a written case study, as well as a wide variety of multiple choice, short answer and identification questions covering the agronomic, business and financial management aspects of the superintendent profession.
Fifty-three teams and a total of 194 students from 28 different schools participated in the competition at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America’s annual Golf Industry Show.
A second Cal Poly Pomona team, which consisted of new members, finished in a very respectable 17th place.
For the second consecutive year, the Cal Poly Pomona students took first place in a separate competition at the Gold Industry Show, beating Kansas State. The contest, which was sponsored by the Phoenix-based Tee 2 Green golf tournament consultants, tested participants in turfgrass management, golf game history, and golf courses.
The teams were advised by plant science lecturers Alan Moss and Priti Saxena.
