If you’ve noticed an odor recently near Cal Poly Pomona, it’s probably because the farm at the Don B. Huntley College of Agriculture is going green!
The farm crew is spreading compost on the field that most people are familiar with as the site of the Corn Maze during the annual Pumpkin Festival.
The compost is made out of recycled green or yard waste. It is a natural way build the soil, prevent erosion, and to put nutrients back into the soils where plants can use them. It is also a part of our efforts to keep green waste out of the landfills and put it back where it belongs-on the farm. Adding compost and building our soil is part of our long-term effort to improve the fields and the crops that are planted here at Cal Poly Pomona.
More than 100 tons of compost are needed to cover the four-acre field. The crew is trying to finish spreading the compost before the next winter storm, which is expected to hit on Friday, Feb. 17.
