Food Science Students Excel

Food Science Society honored by the Institute of Food Technologists Association

The fall quarter is only days away from starting, but food science students already have accomplished a lot so far this year.

Food Science Student Group Wins Honor

Cal Poly Pomona’s Food Science Society was honored by the Institute of Food Technologists’ Student Association.

The group was chosen as the 2015 Outstanding Chapter for Organizational Growth. The Food Science Society had to submit a 400-word essay describing how the club had grown or improved in the past year and how they achieved their goals.

Overall, the society received a “Silver” standing based on its total scores. Only four student groups received a “Gold” standing.

Recent Graduate Named Finalist in Poster Competition

Spencer Jones, a recent graduate in food science and technology, was one of five finalists in a national student poster competition.

Jones made a presentation on “Effects of Dietary Fiber Sources and Addition Levels on Organoleptic Properties of Fortified Pasta Products” at the Institute of Food Technologists student poster competition in Chicago in July.

He competed in the “Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods” division against four graduate students at the master’s level. Jones graduated in June with a bachelor’s degree.

Food Science Teams Excel

Two separate teams of Cal Poly Pomona food science students recorded top finishes in competitions earlier this year.

Jaclyn Gonzalez, Sabah Baig, Kristine Frohnauer and Sandra Largaespada (who was a FST student from Cal State Los Angeles) took second prize in March at the Southern California Food Industry Conference in Anaheim  for a product they developed called “P-Stash to Go,” a pistachio-based, ready-to-eat dip using all natural ingredients. Gonzalez, Baig and Frohnauer are continuing students in food science and technology.

Another team of Jaynie Tao, Ali Hasan, Giselle Hernandez, Spencer Jones, Lisa Mai, Haley Smolinski, Ashley Stowells and Megan Telebrico took first place in the biological and agricultural science division at the third annual Cal Poly Pomona Student Research Conference for its presentation on “Development of a fortified rice product using edible insect flours for developing countries.”

The team participated in the CSU Student Research Competition in May at Cal State San Bernardino and the national Institute of Food Technologists competition in July in Chicago.

Tao is in the second year of her master’s degree program. Smolinski graduated in June and was accepted into the master’s program at Michigan State. Jones, Stowells, Mai and Telebrico also graduated. Hasan and Hernandez, the incoming Food Science Society president, are returning as undergraduates.
