Grad Student Travels to Haiti to Learn About "Humanure"

Emily Creegan

Agricultural sciences graduate student Emily Creegan spent five days in Haiti last October learning about eco-sanitation and how to turn human waste into compost.

Creegan was trained by a nonprofit called GIVE LOVE, which was founded by actress Patricia Arquette and works with Habitat for Humanity, the United Nations and other organizations to develop eco-sanitation programs in Haiti.

Haiti was devastated by a 2010 earthquake, and the populace struggles to get clean water. Cholera outbreaks have occurred because of poor sanitation in the country.

GIVE LOVE seeks to get human waste out of water systems and turn it into compost that can help the native soil and agriculture.
