Two College of Agriculture students had the privilege of attending the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities 29th Annual Conference.

Rafa Cuadras and Melanie Avina traveled to Miami, Fla. for the Oct. 10-12 conference, which covered a variety of topics, ranging from career/internship opportunities and developing leaders to improving college readiness and fostering graduate school success.

The students also had a chance to network with students and faculty from other universities nationwide as well as prospective agricultural employers.

After attending the conference, Avina says she is interested in a career with the USDA.

“Originally, I wanted to work in a research facility, but now I can do that at the USDA,” the third-year animal health science student says. “However, that does not stop me from perusing other fields in the USDA. It’s just one great opportunity out of many.”

The USDA also appealed to Cuadras, as well as the Farm Credit Administration.

“I had a chance to talk to a couple of their recruiters and followed up by applying for a bank inspector full-time position and an internship with the Department of Agriculture,” he says.

Interim Associate Dean Lisa Kessler also attended the conference to network and learn about opportunities for students.
