Cal Poly Pomona Nursery Brings Back Poinsettia Sale for Holidays

Poinsettia in the Nursery

The Plant Sciences Nursery will sell Cal Poly Pomona-grown poinsettia plants for the holiday season for the first time in 13 years.

The festive, red and green plants will be available for $10 each (including tax) at the AGRIscapes greenhouses starting Friday, Nov. 18.

“We have about 3,000 poinsettia, and we’ll sell them until we run out,” says Monica Salembier, nursery manager.

The nursery last sold poinsettia in 2003, when it had greenhouses on campus where the College of Business Administration is now.

New greenhouses were built adjacent to the Farm Store at AGRIscapes in 2009, but the farm store did not have the space to sell all the poinsettia that they could grow.

So Salembier and her students have reconfigured one of the greenhouses to sell the plants. It will be the first time that the greenhouses will be open to the public, she says.

“It’s a great opportunity to show the public what we do here,” Salembier says.

The greenhouse will be open from noon to 5:30 p.m. In addition to the poinsettia plants, customers can also purchase the plants as part of gift baskets and centerpieces, along with the Farm Store’s line of holiday jams, preserves, and salsas.

Families can take their holiday pictures with a special photo prop at the greenhouse. Santa Claus will visit on Saturday, Dec. 10, from noon to 2 p.m.

In addition, the greenhouse will have a “Make Your Own Mistletoe Decoration” activity on Sunday, Dec. 18, from noon to 5 p.m. A $3 donation to the plant science student scholarship fund is requested.

The greenhouse also will offer customers hot beverages: mulled apple cider Monday through Thursday; spiced cranberry punch on Friday; and a hot cocoa bar with marshmallows, peppermints, candy canes, whipped cream, caramel sauce, toppings and spices during the weekend. A $1 per cup donation to the Plant Sciences scholarship fund is requested.

All proceeds will support the Department of Plant Science and its students.

The greenhouses are just to the east of the Farm Store, off South Campus Drive. It will be open daily from noon to 5:30 p.m., starting Nov. 18, except for Thanksgiving. Customer parking is available in a gravel lot to the west of the greenhouses and curbside pick-up at greenhouse entrance.
