Five College of Agriculture students traveled to Philadelphia last month to participate in an intercollegiate food marketing competition.

The students participated in the “Food Marketing Challenge” sponsored by the Food Distribution Research Society. Cal Poly Pomona was one of nine universities in the competition.

The contest required student to apply their agribusiness knowledge to a business case presented by a company executive on the day of the contest.

In the scenario, the students represented a food service company that supplies restaurants. Their major client, restaurant chain, wanted to add a burger that was 30 percent ground mushrooms to its menu. The product has some benefits compared to ordinary ground beef, including cost and nutrition.

The students were charged with devising a plan to get a ground beef supplier to produce the product. They had eight hours to research the product and its market and then develop a PowerPoint presentation to deliver to a panel of FDRS judges.

Although the team did not advance to the finals, the students enjoyed the experience and the networking opportunities.

The team consisted of students William Carey, Brian Chung, Matthew Golden, Maria Morales and Andrea Zuniga. Jon C. Phillips, food marketing and agribusiness management professor and director of the Center for Food Marketing and Agribusiness Solutions, was the students’ advisor.
