Saemee Lyu

Associate Professor, Department of Apparel Merchandising and Management, Huntley College of Agriculture

Bio

Professor Lyu earned her doctorate in apparel studies at the University of Minnesota. Her doctoral research focuses on the development of soft materials wearables to modify human posture. It has given her the opportunity to apply her knowledge of product analysis and design with human factor analysis. US non-provisional patent application (No. 14/924,261) has been field (2015) and approved (2019) on the inventions resulting from her dissertation project. Within a variety of domains, she was able to see potential in this research to continue innovative product development and to develop relevant teaching curricula in design research.
Lyu earned a master's degree in clothing and textiles at Seoul National University in 2011 and a bachelor's degree in clothing and textiles at Kyungpook National University in 2009.
Professor Lyu has experience in both research and creative activities. As a research assistant, she was the lead research assistant in the UMN Human Dimensioning© Lab from 2012 to 2014 which provided a broader understanding of managing research projects and laboratories. She has participated in various fashion shows and exhibitions including a juried design (2015, 2017, and 2018 ITAA design exhibition) giving her valuable experience beyond technical elements of design. From many research projects and creative activities, Professor Lyu has studied anthropometric technology, product development, and advanced pattern construction and had opportunities to study 3D body scanning technology with several software programs including ScanWorX, Adobe design software, TUKAcad, and TUKA3D.
As a faculty member, Dr. Lyu received ESRAP (Educators for Socially Responsible Apparel Practices) Award in professional level for her design entitled "Athleisure Hanbok"  in 2018. For teaching achievement, she received the Teacher of the Year Award from the AMM department for 2018-2019 academic year. She has successfully received SPICE grants and Lottery funding (total $72,500) for 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.
