    A GE Assessment Policy was approved in January 2009 and implementation on the new policy began soon after. A set of goals and outcomes for the GE Program, based on the Principles developed by the National Leadership Council for Liberal Education and America's Promise (LEAP), were developed and are currently before the Academic Senate. The GE Assessment Committee has sponsored a number of activities to encourage the evaluation of the GE Outcomes by direct and indirect methods.

    Coincident with these efforts, the university’s accreditation agency, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) revised their standards and expectations. One standard asks that baccalaureate programs ensure the development of core competencies including, but not limited to, written and oral communication, quantitative reasoning, information literacy, and critical thinking. Institutions must describe how the curriculum addresses each of the five core competencies, explain their learning outcomes in relation to those core competencies, and demonstrate, through evidence of student performance, the extent to which those outcomes are achieved.

    The purpose of the Critical Thinking Rubric Faculty Workgroup (CTRFW) is to investigate the implementation on a broad scale of a rubric to evaluate student work product for evidence of critical thinking. Academic Programs will provide resources for up to eight faculty from various disciplines. Through meetings and individual work, CTRFW members will develop a rubric, identify and collect appropriate student work products, meet for “norming” and grading sessions, and analyze the process to make recommendations regarding expanded implementation.

GE Rubric Pilot Faculty Learning Community - Spring 2011 - Fall 2011

  • In 2009-10, the University G.E. Assessment Committee developed student learning outcomes (SLOs) for General Education. In the spring and summer of 2010, three groups of faculty who teach General Education courses created assessment rubrics to evaluate the achievement of the student learning outcomes. In this Faculty Learning Community (FLC), participants will pilot these rubrics using collected work samples from G.E. courses they teach in the representative content areas covered by the selected SLOs. The rubrics can be viewed here.

    Academic Programs will provide resources for up to 9 faculty from various disciplines appropriate to the learning outcomes measured by the existing G.E. assessment rubrics (listed in the appendix of the Application). Through meetings, and individual work, G.E. Rubric Pilot FLC members will identify appropriate student work products, implement G.E. assessment rubrics, meet for “norming” and grading sessions and will make recommendations to the G.E. Assessment committee regarding the implementation and continued use of the G.E. rubrics.
