Video Players

An accessible video player would complement captioned videos and allow full accessibility to all. This means that buttons are labeled and keyboard navigable.  The video player is compatible with screen readers and magnifiers. Below are a list of Video Players that are accessible and can be used to incorporate videos onto your website.

• Using YouTube with a Screen Reader – Provides a description of YouTube Flash Player components and keyboard shortcuts. source: Google.
• Accessibility for Windows Media Player Videos - Accessing captions based on different Windows Media Player versions. source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
• Able Player - Fully accessible HTML5 media player that runs on most web browsers. It features keyboard-accessible controls that are labeled for screen reader users and controllable by speech recognition users. source: Able Player.
• OzPlayer - Follows W3C guidelines and features captions, transcripts, keyboard navigation, and audio tracks. HTML is automatically generated. source: AccessibilityOz.

Audio Description (Also Known as Video Description or Descriptive Narration)

• Audio Description, Resources, & Examples - Audio description is a means to inform individuals who are blind or who have low vision about visual content essential for comprehension of the video. Description includes information about actions, characters, scene changes, on-screen text, and other visual content. Audio description typically is added during existing pauses in dialogue to supplement the audio track, or description is incorporated into the dialog itself. source: American Council of the Blind.

MathML and LaTeX

• MathML & LaTeX - MathML is an application of XML that is supported by many browsers and uses a text editor. This program was developed by the World Wide Web Consortium, an international community that works to develop Web standards. LaTeX is a document preparation system for high-quality typesetting with features that let the user do advanced typesetting of mathematics with AMS-LaTeX and typesetting of complex mathematical formulas.  Both of these programs offer solutions to previous challenges in the digital math world.
