Impacted Majors

The California State University (CSU) designates majors as impacted when more applications are received in the initial filing period from CSU eligible applicants than can be accommodated by the campus.

The CSU will announce during the fall filing period those majors that are impacted and the supplementary criteria campuses will use.  That announcement will be published in the CSU Review, which is distributed to high school and college counselors.  Information about the supplementary criteria is also sent to impacted major applicants.

All freshmen and transfer applicants for these impacted academic majors must meet supplemental eligibility criteria defined by Cal Poly Pomona in addition to all CSU eligibility requirements. Continuing students seeking a change of major into an impacted program must also meet supplemental criteria defined by Cal Poly Pomona.  Change of major applications are considered concurrently with transfer applications and approval is based on program capacity.

Applying to an Impacted Major

All applicants who apply to an impacted major at Cal Poly Pomona are encouraged to identify a non-impacted alternate major on their admission application.
Impacted major requirements:

  • Applications will only be accepted for the fall quarter.
  • Applications must be submitted by November 30 for the fall quarter of the following year (postmark by Nov. 30 will be accepted).
  • Applicants must meet regular University admission requirements and meet the supplemental program requirements for each major.
  • Selection for First-Time Freshman applicants is determined by the Eligibility Index; which is comprised of high school GPA and SAT/ACT scores.
  • Admission of First-Time Freshmen is dependent on receipt of an official final high school transcript.
  • Admission of upper division transfer students will be based on overall GPA in transferable courses, completion of all supplemental program requirements and "Golden Four" courses with a grade of "C" or better.
  • Admission for upper division transfer students must complete 60 or more transferable semester college units (90 quarter units) prior to transferring.
  • Admission of  upper division transfer students is dependent on receipt of all official final college transcripts.

The Golden Four courses consist of the following:

  • Oral Communication
  • English Composition
  • Critical Thinking
  • Quantitative Reasoning

*Note:

  • All transfer students MUST complete the 60 transferrable units.
  • Eligible California veterans receive admission priority.
  • Official SAT/ACT test scores must be received in the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Planning by January 31.

All University

In addition to your undergraduate admissions application, you will also need to submit other necessary documents including official transcripts from all institutions attended and standardized test results.  These documents must be sent directly to the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Planning at Cal Poly Pomona by the requested dates.

At this time, Cal Poly Pomona is experiencing increased demand across all levels, but the increase is most dramatic with entering freshmen.  The campus anticipates that the increased freshmen demand will exceed our capacity to offer a quality education to our students.  Therefore, be advised that even though you may submit an application to an impacted major and identify an alternate major, we may not be able to accommodate you in that alternate major.  Please keep in mind when applying to an impacted major.
