About this Major
Food and Nutrition students are generally interested in many aspects of food, health and people with a desire to make a difference in the well being of others. To achieve professional expertise students pursue a variety ofextracurricular educational opportunities in addition to their traditional coursework.
Real world learning opportunities
Community service — As part of community service nutrition/dietetic students study and work in the community delivering nutrition education at schools, senior citizen centers and the LA County Women, Infants and Children Clinics.
Internships — Through internships some nutrition science students are studying the immunological properties of human milk at a new biotech company that processes human milk for neonatal intensive care units.
Research — One student this year took the initiative to author a research paper on the nutrient composition of donate human milk which is now in press in the journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Another undergraduate nutrition science student published two papers during his undergraduate study with a professor!
Volunteer — Other students volunteer at a local hospitals and skilled nursing facilities where they work with a variety of patients such as those with congestive heart failure.
Food science students learn food processing pursuing internships at dairy, sushi, supplement, fresh produce packaging and seasoning amount others type of food companies. On campus students have the opportunity to participate in National Institutes of Health funded research on the requirement for folate and choline in subjects with different genetic backgrounds as well as industry supported research of developing healthy food alternatives.
The Human Nutrition and Food Science department has created unique courses that are not taught at most, if any, other University. These courses are focused on nutrition genetics and evaluation of alternative medicine. We also are introducing a year of practical nutrition Spanish for junior and senior dietetic students (a Spanish Minor is encouraged for some students). New courses in food engineering, food plant unit operations and food chemistry are currently being offered. In the past year food science students went to Costa Rica to study food systems in the developing countries. This course will be offered every other year.
Form enduring friendships through club and student competition teams. HNFS students spontaneously form some the of most active and productive clubs at Cal Poly Pomona: the Food and Nutrition Forum and the Food Scientists Society (national finalists for student club of the year 2008). Both food science and nutrition students form college bowl teams to compete against other universities. The Food Science team competes annually in the Mountain West Region. Students form their own food product development teams that compete locally and nationally. Students recently won 2 of three Southern California Institute of Food Technologists Section food product development contests at Cal State LA and at Cal Ply Pomona. One teams product a gluten free snack finished third nationally at the annual IFT meeting in Orlando FL .
