Los Rancheros

About This Club

Established in 1946, Los Rancheros serves students majoring, or with an interest, in agronomy or soil science. Active members may become members of the Student Activities Subdivision of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA), Crop Science Society of America (CSSA), and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA). Los Rancheros sponsors the College of Agriculture's annual Pumpkin Festival, proceeds of which help support Los Rancheros, the Crops Judging Team, and the farm throughout the year.

Los Rancheros is also an active member of Ag Council, participating in many college wide activities each quarter. Los Rancheros sends members to state and national conferences and on field trips to various production and research organizations.

Crops Judging Team (NACTA)

The Crops Judging Team studies plant and pest identification, general agronomic practices, equipment identification and agricultural mathematics for the annual NACTA competition. NACTA is a large agricultural college competition, usually taking place back east. Students join Los Rancheros to take leadership opportunities, make industry contacts, and meet new friends with common interests.

What is Agronomy?

Agronomy is a branch of agricultural science that deals with the study of crops and the soils in which they grow. Agronomists work to develop methods that will improve the use of soil and increase the production of food and fiber crops. They conduct research in crop rotation, irrigation and drainage, plant breeding, soil classification, soil fertility, weed control, and other areas. … Soil science deals with soil as a natural resource on the surface of the earth including soil formation, classification and mapping, physical, chemical, biological, and fertility properties of soils per se; and these properties in relation to the use and management of soils.” – Wikipedia.org
