San Dimas-based WebMetro is one of the largest and fastest-growing digital marketing agencies in the country. When the company is looking for the best and the brightest to fill some of its job openings, WebMetro Director of Marketing Communications Lydia Chen Shah knows where to turn.
Sixteen of WebMetro’s nearly 100 employees are Cal Poly Pomona alumni.
“When we had some openings at WebMetro for entry-level media specialists, I asked for recommendations of Cal Poly Pomona graduates who were superstars,” she says. “We’re looking for high-caliber, driven candidates who are interested in taking a career step in online marketing and advertising.”
Chen Shah graduated from Cal Poly Pomona in 2001 with a degree in business administration – marketing management. She serves on the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors and is an adjunct faculty member.
She has kept in touch with international business and marketing Professor James Swartz and has made connections with other faculty members. There are no formal ties between WebMetro and Cal Poly Pomona, but when the company has a round of openings, Chen Shah reaches out to her Cal Poly Pomona contacts and also considers students in her classes.
Chen Shah periodically invites her marketing students to give their group presentations in WebMetro’s main conference room. This promotes the university’s learn-by-doing method while also giving WebMetro’s senior managers the opportunity to evaluate potential job candidates.
“Our tagline is ‘Driven to Outperform.’ Our clients charge us with not only finding the best opportunities for how to grow their business through online marketing, but to constantly improve the results of what we’re delivering,” Chen Shah says. “That company DNA aligns with Cal Poly Pomona’s graduates who are in that ‘learn by doing’ mode, coupled with drive and persistence. It’s someone who is always willing to learn. We’re in an industry where you can’t be complacent.”
WebMetro provides paid search, SEO, mobile search, user engagement and conversion rate optimization services, content marketing, and online media strategies including the integration of display, social advertising and email marketing.
The company was recognized by Advertising Age magazine as one of the largest U.S. search marketing agencies and the 10th fastest growing in the country. It is a five-time consecutive honoree by the Los Angeles Business Journal as one of the region’s fastest-growing private companies.
WebMetro was named to the 2012 Inc. 5000 List of America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies with a 235 percent growth rate from 2008 to 2011. The corporate headquarters has expanded multiple times, and WebMetro opened offices in West Los Angeles and Israel.
With this growth and success come opportunities, and one of the first Cal Poly Pomona graduates to benefit from Chen Shah reaching out to her alma mater was Ryan Miller, eMarketing manager at WebMetro. In his last quarter at Cal Poly Pomona, Swartz told him about the job opening. He was hired one month after graduating in 2010 and has since been promoted twice.
“WebMetro is full of some of the smartest people I know,” Miller says. “When I first started here at WebMetro, I was shocked at how smart the team is. It honestly took me months, if not years, to learn to keep up. WebMetro is a very bright group of people, and they only look for the brightest and best talent. I think they have done a great job finding that talent at Cal Poly Pomona.”
