The Polywogen started traveling around campus on September 15, 1975. The service was the result of requests the University Parking Committee received from students, faculty and staff for some sort of transportation from the parking lots to campus buildings. Three tractors were purchased from the Ontario Airport. Fifteen cars, each capable of carrying about 25 people, were purchased from the Ontario Motor Speedway. The cars were repainted gold and green and canopies were added. The cost of starting the operation was $12,000.
