Student Organizations to Fight Cancer with Food in the CBA Courtyard
Cal Poly Pomona student organizations will be raising money to help fund research for a cure to cancer with a food-fest at the College of Business Administration next Thursday.
Sales and marketing fraternity Pi Sigma Epsilon, Cal Poly Pomona Finance Society, National Society of Leadership and Success and WAVES will be various treats from root beer floats to spam musubi in an effort to raise money for the Lymphoma Research Foundation on May 25 in the CBA Courtyard.
“Last summer, a family member of one of our members passed away following a battle with lymphoma,” says Mendie Huang, graduating hospitality management senior and CBA StrEATWALK organizer. “We had a short chat where he asked if we could have a fundraiser for lymphoma so the next family wouldn’t lose a loved one and it grew from there.”
As the fundraising chair for PSE, Huang began planning StrEAT WALK at the end of winter quarter by reaching out to other student organizations. She says the Finance Society, WAVES and NSLS were onboard from the start.
Each club will bring one item; food will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The clubs have set a goal of raising $1,000 to donate to the foundation.
“It’s not much, but every little bit helps,” Huang says. “If this first time goes well, we’re hoping to someday turn it into an annual event destination.”
