What do serious and compelling reasons mean?

A serious and compelling reason is a condition that is totally out of the student's control.  It means that you need to drop all of your classes, not just one, due to the following reasons: accident, illness, death in the family (immediate family), military service and legal issues.

How do I drop a class after the 15th day of class?

Complete a petition called Request for Class Withdrawal for Serious and Compelling Reasons (PDF), attach documentation (police report, doctor's note, death certificate, letter from the military, letter from your lawyer, etc.) and an explanation of why you need to drop on a Word document, and turn it in to the CBA Student Success Center, Building 164, Room 1060.

Can I drop a class if I am not doing well in the class after 15 days of instruction?

No, not doing well in a class is not an acceptable reason for withdrawing from a class.

Can I drop a class if my work schedule changes after 15 days of instruction?

No, a change in work schedule is not an acceptable reason for withdrawing from a class.

What is a leave of absence?

When a student finds it necessary to interrupt progress toward a degree for a reason related to the educational objective and acceptable to the appropriate university authorities, the student may be granted a leave of absence. A student on leave of absence may, upon return from the leave, continue in the same program that the student had prior to the leave, and the student retains the right to elect requirements in effect at the time of entrance or re-entrance into the curriculum. Only students in good standing are eligible for a leave of absence. The reason for requesting a leave must be stated completely and clearly. Students may petition for a leave of absence for such reasons as: professional or academic opportunities, such as travel or study abroad, or participation in field study or research projects; medical reasons, including pregnancy, major surgery, or other health-related circumstances; and financial reasons, such as the need to work for a specific period in order to resume study with adequate resources. Approval will depend upon the significance of the leave in furthering the student's education objective. It is the student's responsibility to demonstrate the significant relationship between the leave of absence and the progress toward the educational objective. Leaves may be granted for a maximum of two years or eight consecutive quarters. A request for leave of absence must be filed prior to the period of absence. Retroactive leave requests will not be approved.

What if I did not file a leave of absence and have not enrolled for more than two consecutive quarters?

Students who do not enroll for three or more consecutive quarters must reapply for admission to the university by submitting an admission application to the Office of Admissions & Outreach within the admission-filing period. Students are subject to new degree requirements at the time of their readmission.
