What is the Adapted Physical Education Added Authorization?

The Adapted Physical Education Authorization is an authorization that you can add on to a Multiple Subject, Single Subject, or Education Specialist credential. It permits candidates to teach physical education to students with disabilities authorized by your credential.
Offered by the: College of Education and Integrative Studies, Education Department and College of Science, Kinesiology and Health Promotion Department

Courses are designed to ensure that candidates have opportunities to develop a broad education and philosophical background on which to base their APE program decisions. The authorization may be added to an existing basic credential or earned concurrently with a basic credential. Core courses include:

Prerequisites: 4 units

  • Enrollment in or hold a Single Subject or Education Specialist Credential
  • KIN 206S/206AS - Introduction to Students with a Disability Service Learning/Activity (3/1)

Required Core Courses: 30 units

  • KIN 432S - Behavior Support and Other Plans Used in Adapted Physical Education Service Learning (3) and
  • KIN 431AS - Students with Disabilities Field Experiences Service Learning (1)
  • KIN 433S - Assessment Policies and Procedures in Adapted Physical Education Service Learning (3) and
  • KIN 431AS - Students with Disabilities Field Experiences Service Learning (1)
  • KIN 434 - Program Development and Implementation in Adapted Physical Education (3)
  • KIN 435S - Motor Assessment in Adapted Physical Education Service Learning (3) and
  • KIN 431AS - Students with Disabilities Field Experiences Service Learning (1)
  • KIN 436 - Clinical Practice in Adapted Physical Education (2) or
  • TED 435 - Clinical Practice I (8)
  • KIN 437 - Adapted Physical Education Candidate Assessment (1)
  • KIN 553 - Curriculum Development in Physical Education (3)
  • KIN 559 - Contemporary Physical Education Instruction (3)
  • KIN 570 - Management of Adapted Physical Education Programs (3)
  • KIN 575S/575AS - Motor Practicum for Individuals with Disabilities Service Learning (2/1)

Additional courses may be required if there is no kinesiology or physical education pedagogy background.
