Each spring, the EWS Department awards scholarships to its students. More infomration about the 2016-17 academic year awards will be posted during the Spring 2017 quarter.

Requirements for all awards
A two-page essay addressing the following question: What qualifies you to be the recipient of the EWS award(s) for which you are applying. Please note the criteria for each award and make comments specific to the award(s) you are seeking. More information regarding deadlines will be posted during Spring Quarter, 2017. All scholarship information is subject to change without notice. 

Charles C. Irby Award
A $500 scholarship award has been established in memory of Charles C. Irby, the first chairperson of the Ethnic & Women’s Studies Department. Each year the EWS Department presents this prestigious award at Commencement to a GEMS student demonstrating academic excellence in any area of Ethnic and/or Women’s Studies. This award is for GEMS graduating seniors who are planning to attend graduate school within the next two years. A minimum Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 3.5 is required.

Richard and Teresa Santillan Community Service & Activist Scholar Award
A $300 scholarship will be awarded to a student for outstanding community service and/or activism at Cal Poly Pomona and the surrounding community. Open to all GEMS majors. A minimum Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 3.0 is required.

Dianne B. Gugel Women’s Studies Award
A $300 scholarship will be awarded to a student for exemplifying a GEMS scholar. The student must demonstrate academic excellence and commitment to Women’s issues. Open to GEMS majors, with a Women’s Studies concentration. A minimum Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 3.2 is required.

Native American Studies Award
A $250 scholarship award for a student involved in Native American research, community service learning and/or on-campus work with Native American communities. Open to GEMS majors or Native American Studies Minors. A minimum Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 3.00 is required.

GEMS Promising First Year Award
A $250 scholarship award to a promising GEMS major, who has completed their first year as a freshman, transfer, or change of major into GEMS.The student must have completed at least three EWS classes. A minimum Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 3.0 is required.

EWS Faculty Book Awards (Bronco Bookstore Gift Certificates)
$150 book award(s) for GEMS first year students, sophomores, and juniors who have demonstrated academic excellence and commitment to the values and mission of the EWS Department. A minimum Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 2.75 is required.
