Education Alumnus Advancing E-Learning at Apple

Adam Hain

Adam Hain (’18, master’s in educational multimedia) earned valuable skills in web design, graphic arts and media creation as a student at Cal Poly Pomona. Now the 2016 alumnus plans to take his talents to one of the most recognizable companies in the world – Apple. In his new position, he will develop e-learning courses for Apple’s global corporate personnel.

Hain joined Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino in June 2018 as an instructional designer.

Previously, he worked as an instructional designer for Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona. At WesternU, he conducted educational research and developed numerous online trainings for faculty.

“I have really enjoyed working in higher education, but I am excited to change the pace and be in an environment that is demanding in a different way,” Hain said. “I'm excited to come through and deliver innovative online trainings as part of a large and critical department at Apple.”

“I use the skills I gained in the program daily,” Hain said. “The varied curriculum really prepared me for my actual job duties. I did a lot of research of graduate programs in the area and found this program to be very applied and relevant. I learned how to deal with HTML, video editing, image manipulation, research and application of educational technology. Additionally, I used the projects from the program to build a portfolio, which led to my immediate hire.”

Hain credits his experience in teaching educational technology to further develop his skills. After completing the master’s program, Professor Shahnaz Lotfipour, educational multimedia program coordinator, offered him an adjunct faculty position in instructional design. He taught during spring quarter in 2017 and 2018.

“Since I was able to design the environment I was teaching in, it was a great learning experience for me as well,” Hain said. “I have been able to witness some wonderful collaboration and engagement among the educational multimedia students. Every cohort has been truly inspiring.”

Hain’s first assignment at Apple includes evaluating its current online training system and recording video demonstrations of software functionality. He will also publish the training materials on an interactive website and link it to the company’s learning management system.

“I am so proud of Adam,” Lotfipour said. “It has been a privilege to work with him and contribute to his professional development. Among his many top qualities are his thirst for knowledge, attentiveness, commitment to learning new and innovative ideas, and challenging himself and others around him. He will have an amazing future. I wish him great success in his new position with Apple.”

Hain is currently pursuing a doctorate degree through Central Michigan University’s online program and will follow his passion for incorporating technology into education.

“I’m sure the future will hold many exciting possibilities,” he said. “I was lucky enough to conduct research and present internationally for WesternU, so I am hoping as part of my future research I will be able to explore the educational technology community as an active contributor.”
