Hundreds Attend Teacher Education Job Fair

More than 80 education employers and hundreds of students, faculty and staff descended on Cal Poly Pomona’s Teacher Education Job Fair on Feb. 25.

Representatives from the Pomona Unified School District, Chaffey Joint Union High School District, Los Angeles Unified School District and other districts met with prospective teaching candidates and gave on-the-spot interviews. Students were offered teaching positions and clinical practice placement through the job fair sponsored by the Career Center.

“We were extremely happy with the turnout of this event,” said Nick Salerno, coordinator of educational partnerships for the College of Education & Integrative Studies. “With the teacher shortage that is happening, this event was the perfect opportunity for students to make connections and find potential positions.”

Last year’s employer attendance was 55. The Career Center set a record this year with additional school districts and non-profit organizations attending the job fair at the Bronco Student Center.

This was the second job fair in five years that Cheryl Love, a career counselor and liaison to CEIS, has coordinated with the support of Salerno. She says that this job fair was created to allow students to network with education employers, many of whom are Cal Poly Pomona alumni, and learn what they seek in applicants.

“The employers were very pleased with the professionalism of the Career Center staff and student volunteers,” said Love. “They were also very pleased with the caliber of Cal Poly Pomona students and alumni, and as a result LAUSD has inquired about holding more interviews at our Career Center this year.”
