Composition

Welcome to Cal Poly Pomona. The University is committed to preparing students to communicate effectively in whatever career path they might choose. Students arrive with a diverse set of experiences in writing. The EFL department accommodates this by offering three options to meet the University's composition requirements. A student's placement into these courses is based largely on his or her English Placement Test (EPT) scores and a process called "Directed Self Placement" through Poly Placement Options. This page will help students make the proper choice after they have received that score.

If you have not taken your EPT, please visit the CPP Test Center for instructions. Otherwise, click on the topics below for answers to frequently asked questions.

Your EPT score is the first step in finding the right composition course for you. Locate your score in the column below to see what you should do next.

The process that CPP's first-year writing program uses is called "Directed Self Placement" (DSP) through Poly Placement Options. DSP gives you the opportunity to place yourself into the written-composition course that is best for you. You know the kind of reading-and-writing background you have had. You know what kind of learner you are—what motivates you, how much time you need to get work done, what level of challenge suits you. Go to the Directed Self-Placement page to help you make the best decision, and consult the Composition Courses page for more information on the courses offered.

ESE 005 is a two-week online workshop where students work closely with a CPP instructor to evaluate their writing and reading practices, and place them in the best course sequence. Offered in the Summer Quarter only, the online workshop covers basic rhetorical strategies, reading strategies, thesis development, and argumentation. Students can earn a "0,"; "1," or "2" in the course.

To enroll in ESE 005, follow the instructions found at Early Start. You will have to sign up on the "Early Start SMART PAGE" before you are able to register for the class.

You should take ESE 005 as soon as possible. When you show up at CPP's Summer Orientation, you will meet with an advisor who will help you enroll in your classes. At that advising session, it is best if you know what writing course you will need to sign up for.

If you haven't completed ESE 005 by the time of your orientation session, see the link below on selecting the appropriate class, but keep in mind that you will still need to enroll in ESE 005.

With both your EPT score and your ESE 005 score, you should now consult the EPT Score Chart again. Locate your EPT score in column 1, and your ESE 005 score in column 2 to determine the best course sequence for you.
