CLASS Scholarships

Through donors' generosity, the College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS) has the privilege of awarding scholarships to serve our students better. We hope to provide our students with every opportunity to prosper and grow, regardless of their financial circumstances. Applying for scholarships may seem like a daunting task, but we make it our priority to streamline our students' process.

The system will match you with all the scholarship opportunities available to you. Please be aware many scholarships have additional requirements beyond the general application. Eligibility: Students majoring in Communication, Journalism, Media or Public Relations, or for other students not majoring in Communication but has special interest or involvement in communications; Minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA

Eligibility: All undergraduate majors in Politcal Science, Journalism/Communication, Economics, Psychology, or Sociology; Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA; Experience in public service or service learning; Demonstrated financial need at the time of awarding

$500 (min) Michi and Walter Weglyn Endowed Scholarship for Social Justice and Peace

Eligibility: Sophomore or Junior standing at time of application; Minimum 3.3 GPA

Additional Requirements: Essay that clearly articulates what you have worked for in regards to social justice and peace or discuss how your student goals incorporate social justice and peace.

$500  Dr. Toni-Mokjaetji Humber Memorial Book Scholarship

Eligibility: Any undergraduate, entering and continuing students at any college or major in the university. All class levels; full and part time students: must be enrolled in 6 or more units to receive disbursement; Minimum 2.0 GPA (or higher); California and non-California residents/US Citizens and noncitizens/International.

Additional Requirements: Essay: 300-word or less personal statement discussing: Academic goals, career objectives, leadership activities in the Black community, how the scholarship will personally benefit applicant, application submission deadline aligns with University Scholarship deadlines for 2024-2026 (April 2 in 2024 only; otherwise typically March 2)

Eligibility: Undergraduate students majoring in Theatre, Music, or minoring in Dance; Full-time student; Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA; U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Eligibility: Communication major, either Journalism or Public Relations track; Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior standing at time of application; Minimum GPA cumulative 3.5; Demonstrated financial need at the time of awarding

Additional Requirements: Essay (500 words) on why you want to be a journalist or public realtions practitioner; 2-3 writing samples, preferably samples of work published in high school or college media (such as newspaper, website, newsletter etc.); 2 letters of reccomendation specifically for this scholarship.

$1000 Gary Keele Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Communication major, with an Option of Organizational or Interpersonal Communication; Cal Poly Pomona GPA greater than or equal to 3.5; Full-time student

$1000 Jacque Weiss Scholarship

Eligibility: Incoming first-year Communication majors; Minimum High School GPA of 3.5

Additional Requirements: Essay (300 words) addresses the following: the applicant’s reason why they/he/she is applying for the scholarship; and, the applicant’s career and educational goals.

$250-$750 Kaufman-Yarbrough Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Undergraduate students majoring in Communication; Cumulative and Cal Poly Pomona GPA must be greater than or equal to 3.25

$1000 Legacy Scholarship

Eligibility: Communication Major; Junior or Senior standing at time of application; Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

Additional Requirements: Supplemental question- In no more than 400 words, please write a personal statement that addresses why you are applying for this scholarship and your commitment to creating a legacy for future Communication majors; Must be available to speak at Fall Event Planning Class event in the year following the award

$500 Patricia A. Kurtz Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Communication major; Junior level standing at time of award; Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; Full-time student

$1500 (min) Lillian Wilds Scholarship

Eligibility: English and Modern Languages major; Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; Demonstrate involvement with Shakespeare through ONE of the following: High school work verified through two recommendation letters from high school teachers or participation in the Cal Poly (or other) Shakespeare Festival or competent performance in Shakespeare course(s), either completed or in progress, along with two recommendation letters from college teachers.

Additional Requirements: Esssay (1000-1500 words) describing interest in Shakespeare. This paper will be evaluated partly on compositional quality but mainly on its ability to reflect excitement regarding Shakespeare study and performance; Two high school teachers OR Two college instructors who can provide letters of recommendation on your behalf and attest to your demonstrated enthusiasm for Shakespeare; Supplemental Questions- Have you participated in the Cal Poly Pomona Shakespeare Festival or other Shakespeare event?; Are you currently enrolled in a Shakespeare course or have you previously taken a Shakespeare course?

$250 (min) Duo Concertante Music Scholarship

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior; Music major and enrolled/plan to enroll in String Ensemble or Piano Ensemble; Minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; Full-time student

Additional Requirements: Essay (500 words) explaining how your performance activities contribute to the campus' artistic life.

Varies Emphasis/Option: Music Industry Studies

Eligibility: Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior standing; Music Major with an MIS option; Minimum 3.0 or higher GPA in major; Full-time student; Demonstrate ability for high-quality performances or a project creation when submitting it either on or before the date selected by the Music Department (for available dates, please visit the Music Department)

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing; Open to all students who enroll in the specific ensemble for the next academic year; Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.2 or higher; Enrolled and be in good standing in the ensemble for the full term(s) during the academic year.

Additional Requirements: Essay (200 word) demonstrating your service to and/or ability to serve the specific ensemble you are or will be enrolled in, and describe your ability for high-quality performance.

$500 (min) Eric & Elizabeth Turkel Music Scholarship

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing; Music major; Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher; Enrolled at least half-time; Demonstrate ability for high-quality performances and specialize in the study of classical piano or string instruments

Varies Huff Family Scholarship

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing; Music major; Music major who enrolled in saxophone studio and performance seminar; Full-time student

Eligibility: Undergraduate students in the Music Industry Studies Option; Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher

$500 (min) Joy Rosenbauer Music Educators Scholarship

Eligibility: Freshmen; currently enrolled in a Music Major with a Music Education or Pedagogy option; incoming freshmen High School GPA must be a 3.0 or higher; Current students must have a Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; Full-time student

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing; Music major; Minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.5; Full-time student; Demonstrate ability for high-quality performances, based on jury exams or entrance auditions with the Music Department

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing; Play an orchestral instrument or piano; Perform live audition with piano accompaniment for judges panel

Additional Requirements: Submit an attachment with the following information: Where they are currently in school, Instrument, Composer and title of piece they will perform, and timing (max 12 minutes), Name and email address of private studio teacher, Best way to contact you, the student, Agree that if selected you will enroll in orchestra for both terms in the coming year; In order to receive the award, the scholarship winner must: Enroll in MU 3510L at time of award

$500 (min) Paul Anka Music Scholarship

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing; Music major; Minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.2 or higher; Full-time student; Demonstrate the ability for high quality performance by audition at the music department.

Additional Requirements: Supplemental Questions- Are you or will youe be enrolled in Songwriter Showcase?; Audition for scholarships, auditions occur four times per year. Fall Conference: on the afternoon of the day before Fall classes begin. December: during Finals week, at the Fall-semester performance juries. Early February: at the incoming-student auditions. May: during Finals week, at the Spring-semester performance juries. Performances may not exceed 5 minutes. Music need not be memorized.

$400 (min) Recruitment Music Department Scholarship

Eligibility: Incoming Freshmen ONLY; Music major; Minimum High School GPA of 3.0 or higher; Full-time student; Demonstrate ability for high-quality performance during the audition

Additional Requirements: Audition for scholarships, auditions occur four times per year. Fall Conference: on the afternoon of the day before Fall classes begin. December: during Finals week, at the Fall-semester performance juries. Early February: at the incoming-student auditions. May: during Finals week, at the Spring-semester performance juries. Performances may not exceed 5 minutes. Music need not be memorized.

Varies Studio: Piano

Eligibility: Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Graduate standing; Music majors who enrolled in piano studio, an ensemble, and performance seminar; cumulative GPA must be greater than or equal to 3.0 *OR* incoming GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 for incoming freshmen or transfer admitted

Additional Requirements: Essay (200 words) demonstrating your excellence and service in piano performance; Supplemental Question- Will you be in piano studio, an ensemble, and piano seminar for award academic year?

Varies Studio: Voice

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing; Music majors who enroll in voice studio, an ensemble, and voice seminar; Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher or incoming GPA of 3.0 or above for incoming freshmen or transfers

Additional Requirements: Essay (200 words) demonstrating your service or excellence in vocal performance; Supplemental Question- Will you be in voice studio, an ensemble, and voice seminar for award academic year?

Eligibility: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior standing; Music majors who are enrolled in Studio Voice and Chamber Singers; Incoming freshman/transfer GPA must be a 3.0 or higher OR cumulative GPA must be a 3.0 or higher; Demonstrate excellence in classical voice performance

Eligibility: Currently enrolled in the MPA Program; Demonstrate interest and commitment to a career in public service in their personal statement; Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need

$5000 The Sean Yu Student Leadership Scholarship (in honor of Professor David Speak)

Eligibility: Political Science Major; Demonstrate their participation in student organizations on campus; Preference will be given to students who were not given a department scholarship in previous years

Eligibility: Psychology, Sociology, or Behavioral Science major; complete 60 units by time of award; Completed lower division major requirements by time of award; Completed some upper-division requirements in major by the time of award; Cumulative GPA of 3.0; Full-time student

$300 (min) Terry Gullo Scholarship Endowment Fund

Eligibility: Theatre major or have a Theatre or Dance minor; Cumulative GPA of 2.2; Exhibit outstanding participation in various areas of departmental activity and demonstrate a well-rounded, professional artistic attitude.

Additional Requirements: Supplemental Question- Please describe your experience in costume design or costume construction for departmental productions or classes, and why you believe you should receive this scholarship.
