DR. MARY YU DANICO is a professor of Sociology and the Director of the Asian American Transnational Research Initiative at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Her main areas of research include international migration; ethnic and racial relations; Asian American diaspora, ethnic identity in 1.5 and 2nd generation; immigrant families; generations; social justice; and diaspora.  She has published many articles and book chapters, and is the author of The 1.5 Generation: Becoming Korean American in Hawaii (University of Hawaii Press, 2004), Asian American Issues (Greenwood Press, 2004). She also co-edited Transforming the Ivory Tower: Challenging Racism, Sexism, and Heterosexism in Higher Education, and edited Asian American Society Encyclopedia volume 4 (SAGE press 2014). Additionally, she has collaborated with the Chinese American Women Biography project, and the Asian Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund (APIASF) to document the pioneers who championed for Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) designation (2017-2019). Currently she is working on her fourth book MILLENiGens: Everything We Want to Know About Millennials and GenZ  (tentative title).

During her time at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona she has founded the Psychology and Sociology Peer Mentor program (2006-present) and the College of Environmental Design peer mentor program (2017). Also, not only has she served as the Associate Dean of Environmental Design (2015-2017), she was the past president of the Association for Asian American Studies (2012-2014), the past chair of the section of Asia and Asian America for the American Sociological Association (2012-2013), and an Advertising Education Foundation (AEF) fellow (2013).

Mary Yu Danico collaborates and partners with community non profit and industry leaders as well as advocates for underrepresented students and junior scholars and staff.  She believes that the vision of Michi and Walter Weglyn was to inspire us to learn from our past, respond to contemporary injustice, and strategize ways to ensure that future generations will have the social and cultural capital to lead us forward.
