Belinda de Villa-Lopez is a Lecturer at The Collins College of Hospitality Management at California State Polytechnic University since 2004.
Ms. Lopez joined The Collins College in 2002 as Manager of PDI (Professional Development Institute) with over 25 years of professional management and technical experience as a hospitality educator, consultant and public speaker. She was a senior faculty of the Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management program of the University of the Philippines for over 20 years. Prior to moving to Los Angeles in 2001, she handled courses on Human Resource Management (graduate and undergraduate levels), Quality Food Development, Catering Management, Purchasing, Cost Control and Internship, and was consistently ranked in the top 5% on teaching effectiveness. As an academic, she also handled various administrative positions. Ms. Lopez also served as College Secretary (the equivalent of Associate Dean) for the College of Home Economics which offered 7 undergraduate, 5 masters and 3 doctoral programs.
While in the University of the Philippines, Ms. Lopez, on special detail from academe as an appointment by the Board of Regents, served as Director of the Human Resource Development Office (HRDO) in a dual capacity as Diliman Campus (flagship campus) and System Director with direct report of 54 personnel, taking care of 15,000 faculty and staff for close to 5 years. One of the major projects that Ms. Lopez headed was the HR Management Audit Program resulting in streamlining of functions, programs and services of academic and support offices, improved classification and compensation system, rightsizing the university bureaucracy of 5,000 non- teaching staff (1998 to 2001). While serving as faculty in the University of the Philippines, Ms. Lopez also lent her technical expertise to various hotels, restaurants and training centers on foodservice systems improvement. As a faculty in the university, she led the Foodservice Regulatory Committee for 3 years which set up standards and monitored all foodservice operations in campus (in 5 dormitories and 25 academic / service units) serving 28,000 students and up to 5,000 faculty and staff.
Ms. Lopez has been volunteering her time since 2003 as a judge at the ProStart Culinary Competitions at the California state level. She has been teaching HRT 276 (Food, Beverage and Labor Cost Control) since Fall quarter of 2004. She also handles classes on HRT 350 (Management of Human Resources in Hospitality) and HRT 382 (Food & Beverage Operations I).
Ms. Lopez is a Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE) by the American Motel and Hotel Association, a certificated Mediator by the LA Country Bar and has degrees in Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Administration ('75) and Master of Arts in Industrial Relations ('82) from the University of the Philippines.
Prior to joining Cal Poly, Pomona, Ms. Lopez conducted a research on “Organizational Communication Structures and Employee Attitudes in Selected 5 - Star Hotels in Metro Manila” (unpublished).
