Helen Gavin is a lecturer at The Collins College of Hospitality Management at Cal Poly Pomona. She has held this position for the last 10 years. Her area of expertise is in Hospitality Marketing Management. She has also taught courses in Hotel Sales, Advertising and Public Relations, Managerial Accounting as well as the Introduction to the Hospitality Industry.
Gavin has always believed in the “learning by doing” concept of Cal Poly Pomona. Over the past five years she has worked in Yosemite National Park with the concessionaire, Delaware North. She has combined her love of the outdoors and hiking and backpacking with her interest in effective and efficient hospitality operations. In this pursuit she managed White Wolf Lodge in Yosemite National Park. This work experience was featured in the Fall 2012 Collins Magazine and Delaware North’s 360. Gavin received the Nic Fiore Award for Manager of the Season in 2012.
This past summer she was Yosemite National Park’s High Sierra Camps Operations Manager. These camps were featured in the July 2015 issue of Sunset Magazine.
Gavin was a Visiting Advisor and Professor for the Petrozavodsk State University; Tourism Department, in Petrozavodsk, Russia. She has also had a faculty internship in Revenue Management at the Hilton Anaheim.
Her interest in hospitality and travel and tourism has most recently taken her to Rwanda and trekking to see the critically endangered Mountain Gorillas.
She is a graduate of the University of California, Riverside with a joint major in Economics and Administrative Studies. Gavin completed graduate work at Cornell University where she received a Master of Professional Studies in Hotel Administration.
