Standard Operating Procedures
EH&S requires that departments working with chemicals (especially labs) maintain a library of Standard Operating Procedures or Safe Work Practices for the different materials they use. This can be done in a number of ways but the easiest is to use EH&S's SOP templates for materials with different hazard classes. Templates can be downloaded with the link provided and customized to meet the needs of the department. Departments should follow the recommendations below:
- SOP's should be present in specific areas where hazardous materials or chemicals are present to ensure that these records are readily accessible.
- SOP's should be readily accessible to employees working with hazardous materials or chemicals.
- Employees should be familiar with the written procedures and trained on their contents.
- SOP's should be updated as often as necessary to maintain accurate and current information.
