Student Clubs and Activities
Rowing the Cal Poly Pomona concrete canoe
An excellent college education includes more than taking classes. Extracurricular student activities can enrich the college experience, so the Cal Poly Pomona civil engineering program places a strong emphasis on student clubs and extracurricular activities. We have six student clubs devoted specifically to civil engineering. In addition, other clubs with a wider range of interest also are available.
The 12 student chapters within the Department had exceptional events and activities in 2013-2014 academic year. The summary of the activities and events can be found in this newsletter.
The current civil engineering student club activity calendar shows the dates and times for club meetings and other events.
American Society of Civil Engineers
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is a national organization of professional civil engineers. The Cal Poly Pomona student chapter is associated with the national organization, and is the largest civil engineering student club. It also is one of the largest clubs on campus.
Typical club activities include
- Meetings, typically one every two weeks during the academic year. These meetings often include practicing civil engineers as guest speakers
- Ski trip to Mammoth
- Insiders tour of Hoover Dam

One of the highlights of the year is the annual ASCE Pacific Southwest Conference, which is a competition between civil engineering students from universities in Southern California, Southern Nevada, Arizona, and Hawaii. These competitions include the concrete canoe race, steel bridge contest, surveying competition, and other similar events. The winning team in the concrete canoe and steel bridge contests advance to the national competitions. Visit the canoe team on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/cppcanoe.
