Request Counseling Outreach Assistance

The following offerings are topics that may be requested of counselors. However, due to limited resources and/or the possible unavailability of staff during the requested date(s)/times(s), we cannot guarantee every request.

The likelihood of honoring your request is increased significantly if there are alternative dates and times, and if you submit the request at least three (3) weeks in advance. At Cal Poly Pomona, we value diversity and strive to create a supportive and empowering environment that is inclusive of all students. Counseling Services can provide a variety of workshops to address this topic. Workshops can be tailored to focus on cross-cultural communication, exploring personal identity development and diversity awareness, or identifying the general mental health concerns of a particular student group. Popular workshops include:

  • Cross-Cultural Communication
  • Cultural Identity Development
  • Diversity Awareness (e.g., race, gender, sexuality, etc.)
  • Mental Health Needs of Diverse Student Groups (e.g., International students, Asian-American students, Latina/o students, African-American students, etc.)


All students experience obstacles as they transition to college life. Students may find themselves feeling overwhelmed with increased independence, academic demands, changing relationships, entering the job market, or homesickness. Counseling Services can provide workshops to enhance and support students’ academic/career pursuits and assist in creating a successful and meaningful college experience. Popular workshops include:

  • Managing Test Anxiety
  • Managing Interview Anxiety
  • First-Generation College Student Issues
  • Graduate Student Issues/Pursuing and Continuing Higher Education
  • Post-Graduation/Life After College


Relationships play a large role in the overall health and wellness of our students. Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) can provide workshops on recognizing healthy relationships and can assist students in learning helpful strategies to increase effective communication and active listening skills. Workshops can also be tailored to assist students in better understanding their own personality types and how this impacts team settings. Popular workshops include:

  • Healthy Relationships & Setting Boundaries
  • Effective Communication/Listening Skills
  • Personality Types and Team Building
  • Team Building/Team Work


Self-esteem and confidence can dramatically improve every aspect of students’ lives. CAPS can provide workshops to help students learn ways to think of themselves more positively, identify their strengths, and value who they are! These workshops can be focused on learning a helpful skill (e.g., leadership, meditation) and/or addressing a personal barrier (e.g., low self-esteem, social anxiety). Popular workshops include:

  • Leadership Skills
  • Meditation/Mindfulness Practices
  • Self-Esteem/Self-Compassion
  • Social Anxiety/Social Phobia


CAPS is able to provide the following workshops for faculty/staff to aid in their efforts to better support our students on campus. Workshops for faculty/staff focus on helping students in distress, providing information on the mental health concerns of our students, or providing resources/referrals to our campus partners. Faculty/staff can choose from the following:

  • Identifying and Helping Students in Distress (or Notice and Respond)
  • Review of Services Provided at CAPS
  • Understanding Mental Illness and Reducing Stigma (Introductory)
  • Setting Healthy Boundaries with Students
