This exercise began its life in the 1980s on a CDC Cyber 740 mainframe. The original program was written in Cyber Basic by Dan Curran. I rewrote the core algorithms, and then ported the program to Turbo Pascal and MS-DOS. The multiple runs chi-square module was suggested by Steve Bryant. The most recent version (1988) of the MS-DOS program is still available, and it includes a "beat the gametes" game that has not yet been implemented here.

It had always been in the back of my mind to port the program yet again. Using the Webmonkey Javascript tutorial, suggested by denizens of Webdesign-L, I learned enough to make what you see here. (I also learned to crash the Netscape 4.7 Javascript interpreter, but that's another story.)
