Mariappan "Jawa" Jawaharlal, Ph.D.

Bio Sketch

Dr. Mariappan "Jawa" Jawaharlal (Dr. Jawa) is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at California State Polytechnic University (Cal Poly Pomona). Before joining Cal Poly Pomona, Dr. Jawa founded and developed, Inc., an online supplemental education company focusing on K-12 math. He also served as a faculty at Rowan University, NJ and General Motors Institute (renamed as Kettering University), MI. Dr. Jawa is recognized as an outstanding educator for his innovative and engaging teaching pedagogy.

He was born in Tamilnadu, India. He spent his early childhood in the neighboring country Sri Lanka before moving back to India. After schooling in India, he went to Russia (former Soviet Union) where he completed an integrated M. S. program in Mechanical Engineering with Honors. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is fluent in English, Russian and Tamil languages.

Dr. Jawa is married to Rita and has three daughters. He lives in Diamond Bar, CA (at N 34 00.320' W 117 48.89') with his family. He writes education blogs for The Huffington Post. Dr. Jawa has written political columns for the examiner. Dr. Jawa is a multi marathoner. Jawa family loves to travel. Running, scuba diving, hiking and snorkeling are favorite family activities. Dr. Jawa is a certified Chi Running Instructor. He and all his family members are PADI certified open water divers. Jawa family's recent visits include trips to Costa Rica, Jamaica, Honduras, Bahamas, St Thomas, Puerto Rico, Belize, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Grand Bahama.
