The Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers (OSLCC) exist to support student development, cultural enhancement, social justice and academic excellence.  We adhere to the belief that student involvement results in retention, improved academic performance and leadership.  The Division of University Advancement’s prime purpose is to enhance the private support of the University.  The Office of University Development develops programs, events and activities that stimulate the involvement and interest of an ever-growing support base of nearly 140,000 alumni, parents, current donors, and friends to expand and broaden the quality of education at Cal Poly Pomona.


The Director of Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float Program will strive for excellence through a student-centered philosophy that emphasizes mentoring, modeling of positive behavior, and innovative thinking.  The incumbent serves as primary advisor to the Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float Committee and Club, which includes attendance and involvement at annual special events; assists with the planning and implementation of major Rose Float activities; maintains working relationship with the Rose Float Pomona Alumni Association and the San Luis Obispo Rose Float group; oversees safety trainings for committee members; assists with publicity and marketing of Rose Float to the campus and surrounding community; oversees all merchandise sales; fundraising and development; and outreach to faculty, staff, and the community.  The incumbent assists with the recruitment of students for all Rose Float related classes; develops and maintains relationships with campus faculty, alumni, and industry consultants; prepares program evaluations, assessments, and a comprehensive year-end report; provides leadership for the design and implementation of Rose Float assessment efforts; and analyzes assessment data and makes recommendations.  The incumbent serves as the primary Tournament of Roses (TOR) liaison for both Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Rose Float program; ensures that the Rose Float Technical Advisor and students are prepared for all TOR inspections; serves as a liaison to and member of Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float Alumni Board; assists in providing board members with direction and developing initiatives to support the overall Rose Float program; and requests, apply, and coordinate distribution of the charitable grant from Tournament of Roses for Rose Float scholarships awarded to students at both Cal Poly campuses.  The incumbent works with the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for University Advancement and the Director for the Office of Student Life & Cultural Centers to develop a quantified plan that identifies the resource needs of the Rose Float program.  Under the direction of the AVP  for advancement the incumbent implements the plan and activities designed to meet the Rose Float development goals; coordinates Rose Float fund-raising efforts; provides active leadership in the identification, solicitation, cultivation, and stewardship of major donors and donor prospects and formulates and executes short-term and long-term strategic plans to include specific and measurable targets regarding definite fund-raising goals, prospect management, personal contacts, stewardship activities and solicitations. The incumbent develops innovative and exciting ways to market the Rose Float; personally visits with prospective donors, creates and manages appropriate relationships; composes documents such as major gift proposals, contact and technical reports, deliver timely and effective follow-up to prospects and donors, press releases, and communication materials; serves as the main point of contact for the new lab project; maintains Rose Float donor information within the appropriate university wide donor database; and ensures best practices in donor stewardship activities within the Division.  The incumbent works with the Office of Public Affairs to ensure that all development-orientated pieces, communications and events adhere to the campus-wide and division graphic and professional standards; works with the Division’s Gift Processing and Prospect Research offices; participates in OSLCC staff meetings, cluster meetings, retreats, and in-service training sessions; advises assigned ASI committees; represents the Rose Float program, the Division of University Advancement and the University in the community by attending events, participating in local organizations and speaking on behalf of the Rose Float to various community based boards and organizations; and performs other duties as assigned.


Bachelors degree from an accredited university AND successful major gifts fund-raising experience, including program planning and personal solicitation; proven success in goal achievement for operating and capital fund development; and donor cultivation and asks.  The candidate must have the ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to advise professional staff and students individually and in groups on complex related matters; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations; analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.  The candidate must have excellent oral and written skills required relating well and communicating effectively with a variety of constituents, including high-profile leaders; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, on and off campus, serving in a leader role, and as a liaison and representative of the Cal Poly Pomona Rose Float and the Tournament of Roses; and demonstrate accepted business and professional etiquette in all dealings with constituents and colleagues.  The candidate must have the ability to assess and interpret the needs and wishes of prospective donors and to translate these into effective action plans; knowledge of Rose Float goals, priorities and future plans and effectively communicate them to donors and prospects; ability to foster effective working relationships within a team environment; and knowledge of the financial structure of donations, grants and contracts to include cash, gifts-in-kind, stocks, securities, planned gifts, endowments and real estate; and demonstrated accepted business and professional etiquette in all dealings with a diverse population of constituents and colleagues, reflecting the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity.  The candidate must have the ability to work evenings and weekends when required due to donor, development, and cultivation meetings, events and activities; possess a valid California driver’s license and proof of personal automobile insurance and be expected to use personal vehicle for business related travel to local places such as San Luis Obispo and Pasadena for meetings but not limited to these locations.


Experience and familiarity with and success in the complex environment of a public university is preferred.


COMPENSATION: Salary is competitive and commensurate with background and experience.
