The mission of the Instructional & Information Technology (I&IT) Division is to provide stewardship, leadership, and service in support of the teaching and learning mission of the university. I&IT Operations provides central technology support for the design, development, security, and maintenance of campus-wide computing and communications infrastructure.  Services include: email, web services, intranet services, voice-services, directory services, account management for technology access, database management, as well as various server hosting environments.  Systems include:  UNIX, Linux, and Windows for the support of campus applications such as Blackboard, CBORD Odyssey, Viking, Oracle, network management, and help desk ticketing.


Reporting to the Associate CIO for Operations, the Director of Data Center & System Administration will provide management, oversight, and support to the department’s system administration staff, Data Center, and system operations.  The incumbent supervises, develops and mentors the System Administration professionals and ensures that staff is responsive to end user needs.  The incumbent institutes well defined communication and operational processes for Systems Administration staff that support effective and efficient day-to-day operations and escalation response as the situation warrants.  The incumbent coordinates and provides project management oversight for System Administration and Data Center projects.  The incumbent develops and manages the department’s projects, tasks, schedules, and resources in accordance with IT leadership’s established goals, budgets, and timelines.  The incumbent ensures accurate and timely completion of related projects and tracks projects through completion while keeping I&IT leadership and campus customers apprised of project status.  The incumbent works with staff to recommend, implement, and maintain infrastructure and configurations to improve efficiency and cost effectiveness.  The incumbent facilitates and provides leadership in the development of operational procedures, documentation and processes in support of campus system services.  The incumbent performs on-going performance analysis and capacity planning for system services. The incumbent develops and carries out appropriate periodic maintenance procedures, diagnoses and corrects problems, maintains records, and produces and carries out specified change control processes.  The incumbent works with staff members and outside vendors to oversee installation, configuration, and management of system infrastructure and services and provides technical leadership for systems administration personnel concerning maintenance, procedures, technical problems and priorities responds to escalated support needs as required.  The incumbent ensures system security of managed systems in accordance with established policies and procedures; recommends and develops improvements and performs other duties as assigned.


BS degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or a related technical field.  A  BA with equivalent training and work experience will be considered.   The candidate must possess seven (7+) years in system administration experience in an enterprise or university environment with increasing responsibilities and duties; two (2+) years of management and leadership experience; two (2+) years of experience with VMWare ESXi and VCenter;  successful experience in leading technical functions, preferably system administration; experience leading technical staff; project management experience with demonstrated success in managing medium to large technology projects and demonstrated ability to work effectively with technical management and professional staff.  High knowledge of Microsoft architectures and licensing and systems analysis and troubleshooting; knowledge of Microsoft System Center, project leadership skills, and the ability to quickly resolve complex systems problems is required.  Knowledge of TCP/IP stacks/ports and their functions, Unix operating systems, web application security, configuration and development of Linux based systems; MS SQL and SQL language; and managing server backups; ability to concentrate and sit in front of a computer for extended periods of time in an office environment and knowledge of campus accessibility requirements as it applies to websites, documents, and forms.


Master’s Degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related technical field is desirable as well as MCSE in Windows Server 2003/2008; MCSA in Windows Server 2003/2008; MCP with Exchange 2007/2010 and ITIL.


COMPENSATION: Salary is competitive and commensurate with background and experience.
