Giving to the Library
Martha Brown has been a major supporter of the University Library since 1990. Her annual gift of funds to the library in honor of her husband, Cecil Brown, has contributed toward the growth and the enrichment of our collections. She has continued her support by establishing an endowment fund to be used for the Library's collections in the area of the Social Sciences. This fund was established with a $20,000 deposit and is expected to have an annual yield of $1,000.
Cecil Brown, the honoree of the endowment fund, was a veteran war correspondent and a former faculty member at Cal Poly Pomona. He worked closely with well- known journalists such as Edward R. Murrow, Eric Sevareid, and William Shirer. During his lifetime he was awarded some of broadcasting's highest honors such as: the George Foster Peabody Award for journalistic excellence and the "best reporter" award from the Overseas Press Club. For his work as news analyst and commentator on KCET (a Los Angeles public television station) he was awarded the Alfred I. du Pont and the Associated Press awards for best commentary. He also excelled as a scholar and a teacher as was acknowledged by him being named Cal Poly Pomona's Outstanding Professor of 1980.
