Jerry Livingston Voorhis

Jerry Livingston Voorhis was born July 2, 1938 in Pasadena, California and attended Grinnell College where he received a B.A. in History (1960). He later attended Northwestern University where he received an M.A. (1962) and a Ph.D. in History (1968).

Mr. Voorhis taught European and World History at Chicago Teachers College North (1962-1964) and Wisconsin State University in Eau Claire (1965-1967). He spent a year in Germany under a German government scholarship grant studying at the University of Bonn and doing research on his doctoral dissertation. From 1968 until 1981 he taught European, World, and U.S. History at Cal Poly Pomona. From 1977-1984 he worked as a Library systems specialist at the Honnold Library of the Claremont Colleges. He has been active in the civil rights, peace, environmental and social gospel movements.

Mr. Voorhis is an active member of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church in Claremont, California, where he sings in the choir and tutors at the St. Ambrose Youth Wellness Center.

Writings and Publications:

A Study of Official Relations between the German and Danish Governments in the period between 1940 and 1943; (dissertation)

Eight articles in the Dictionary of Scandinavian History, Byron J. Nordstrom, editor, published by Greenwood Press, 1986.

A two volume biography of H. Jerry Voorhis, a three volume political history of the United States from 1932-1968 and scholarly articles in German Studies Review, Scandinavian Studies and the Historian.
