Dawn Van Bruggen Memorial Scholarship
The Dawn Van Bruggen Scholarship was established by the Learning Resource Center after Dawn's sudden death on July 30, 1999.
The scholarship honors this former LRC writing tutor who was an exceptional employee, a determined and involved student, and a good friend. Dawn was an energetic, hardworking, dependable, honest, and outgoing person.
Dawn was helpful to everyone she met, often meeting students late at night if that was their only available time. She was also a humble person who sought tutoring for her own difficult classes. In spite of the demands of school and work, Dawn also found time to volunteer with Disabled Student Services and the Rose Float Club. She considered her paid positions with Housing, Commencement, and the LRC to be more than just employment, but also as a way of giving service to the university.
To keep her memory alive, this scholarship will be given annually to the tutor and tutee who most exemplify Dawn's qualities and who have been with the LRC during the current academic year.
The Dawn Van Bruggen Scholarship award recipient must meet the following criteria:
- Cal Poly Pomona undergraduate student in good academic standing
- LRC participant during the current academic year
- Demonstrated perseverance through adversity
- The Dawn Van Bruggen Scholarship exemplifies Dawn's qualities (refer to Dawn's story above)
To be considered, submit an application and write an essay describing the qualities that make you an outstanding tutee, how you meet the above criteria, how you exemplify Dawn's qualities, and why you should be awarded the scholarship.
Application and essay are due at the LRC no later than 4pm on Friday, May 12th, 2017.
You can download the Dawn Van Bruggen Scholarship for Tutee (PDF), the Dawn Van Bruggen Scholarship for Tutor application (PDF), or pick one up at the LRC.
The winner will be honored at a special award presentation ceremony.
