I joined the faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cal Poly Pomona in Fall 2012. Cal Poly Pomona is an Hispanic-serving, predominantly-undergraduate institution. My department currently has ~10 full-time, tenure-track faculty, graduates ~20 Physics majors per year, and enrolls well over a thousand science and engineering majors each quarter in our introductory physics courses. Recently we established an Astronomy minor option offered through our department. My colleagues and I therefore teach a broad and deep curriculum of physics and astronomy courses. In my astronomy research, I use multiwavelength (primarily infrared and X-ray) observations and modeling to study large-scale star-forming complexes in our Milky Way Galaxy.
The pace of discovery in astronomy over the last century has been head-spinning. I am fortunate, as a researcher, to have the opportunity to work at the frontiers of knowledge. For non-specialists, the imagery and philosophical implications of modern astronomy are extraordinarily compelling, while the language used by scientists to describe their discoveries in professional literature can be impenetrable. I strive to bridge the gap between professional scientists and everyone else through teaching and public outreach. In my classroom, I employ teaching strategies based on current education research, and students are challenged to take an active role in shaping their own learning experience. Beyond the classroom, I have presented at numerous public astronomy events and star parties.
