Doctoral programs are not for everyone. While I am very happy with my choices and love my job, research or academic jobs can be very hard to find. Before applying, consider some statistics about completion rates, student debt and the academic job market.

For a jaundiced view of academia with some grains of truth, consider 100 Reasons Not to Go to Grad School (a blog) -- read the list in ascending order and see the page "If you decide to go anyway" over in the righthand column. This blog applies mostly to doctoral programs, not professional training such as MFT or PsyD and clinical psychology programs where there are more jobs.
