Summer Undergraduate Research Experience

SURE Header

The Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program is facilitated by the Office of Undergraduate Research at Cal Poly Pomona (OUR-CPP).

SURE is a summer research experience for undergraduates where partnering community colleges send STEM students to participate in high-level faculty-mentored research projects over an eight-week program. Students that participate in SURE have the opportunity to present their culminating research projects at our annual

Program Description

Cal Poly Pomona is widely recognized for its polytechnic mission and learning-by-doing philosophy which is closely linked with the research experience. The Office of Undergraduate Research at Cal Poly Pomona (OUR-CPP) works proactively on creating Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates by partnering with surrounding community colleges. The summer research program has been ongoing for three consecutive summers since 2014 and has provided the opportunity for 60 community college students to work with CPP faculty and students on comprehensive and high-level research projects.

In the eight-week program, participating students learn about lab safety training, work on a faculty-mentored research project, articulate what they have learned on a research poster or oral presentation at the annual summer symposium, network and engage with students from other research labs, and integrate to the four-year institution experience. We know that participating in research, a high-impact practice, helps community college students in the transferring process, retain in their major, and graduate on time.

What We Offer

The OUR-CPP will recruit and identify faculty mentors with each faculty mentor overseeing two or three student researchers. Students are grouped by major and research interests. Those groups work together over the duration of the project with a faculty mentor orienting students in lab safety, training, writing, and creating professional research posters. OUR-CPP staff coordinates the summer research activities including the annual summer symposium, summer research, cohort building activities, workshops for professional development, and weekly check-ins to make sure students are actively engaged and to resolve any issues.

Program Costs

The SURE works with community colleges that have funding for their students. The cost for the community college per student is as follows:

  • $4,000 Student stipend (can vary per institution)
  • Up to $1,500 research supplies funding per student
  • $200 funding for coordination/staff support per student

The cost does not include housing or food.
