Huntington Gardens Tour, March 12, 2015

Fifteen Pace Setters, spouses, and friends attended a lovely tour of Huntington Gardens on March 12, 2015. The weather was great. We took the private tour before the gardens opened to the public followed by a fun lunch at one of the many cafés on the grounds. Our group was divided up between two docents who gave us terrific tours. Both docents were captivating story-tellers weaving history, human interest, and details about each part of the gardens.
We did not tour inside any of the buildings but the tour did include the history behind many of the museums and libraries. Most of us were surprised at the impact the Huntington family had on the growth and development of Los Angeles as well as the evolution of the Huntington Gardens. Everyone enjoyed the tour. –Reported by Phil Rosenkrantz

Wine Tasting Seminar with Dr. Ernie Simpson, February 20, 2015

The Chemistry of Wine
with Dr. Ernie Simpson

Collins College of Hospitality Management

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

Dr. Ernie Simpson is a Pace Setter, Chemistry Professor Emeritus, Basketball Referee and a Wine Connoisseur - a true Renaissance man! He led a delightful wine tasting for several Pace Setters joined by members of the American Chemical Society. A part of the proceeds were donated by Ernie to the Pace Setters Scholarship Fund.

Participants can now, with the aroma wheel in hand, describe wines using the proper terminology, making it easier to understand and converse about wines. We learned basic winemaking, corks vs screw tops, oaked vs unoaked, health benefits, wine composition and much, much more.

We tasted two whites, two reds and two dessert wines in addition to three reference wines. They included a lovely Cabernet Sauvignon that sold for $125.00 a bottle and delicious dessert wines from Quady Winery. (Andrew Quady is a Cal Poly graduate!).

The wine tasting was followed by an auction of several of Ernie’s favorite wines, a special tasting and an optional no-host dinner. Thank you Dr. Simpson for sharing your wine knowledge with Pace Setters!

Luncheon Meeting Featuring Dr. Aubrey Fine, October 23, 2014

The Pace Setters October 23 luncheon featured a presentation by Professor Aubrey Fine, psychologist and Cal Poly Pomona education professor, on some interesting facts and heart-warming personal stories about the roles of animals in our lives. His presentation was titled: More Than Puppy Love: Roles of Animals in our Lives and Therapy. Professor Fine is one of the nation's leading pioneers on using therapy animals to help treat children with emotional, social, or physical problems. Dr. Fine has a newly published book: Our Faithful Companions. Proceeds from the book go to student scholarships.

President Ortiz spoke giving parting remarks including a lot of interesting history behind his presidency. Highlights included $161 Million capital campaign and new construction of the College of Business building, residential suites, and BRIC (Bronco Recreation and Intramural Center). Plans are to increase the residential space by 1600 more students. In recognition of his service to the university and Pace Setters, Kathy Harcharik presented Dr. Ortiz with a lifetime membership to Pace Setters.

Huntley Gallery Tour - August 20, 2014

Huntley tour groupPace Setters had a private tour of the new Don B. Huntley Gallery on August 20. The Gallery featured Don Huntley's exceptional western art collection. Mr. Huntley has donated over 100 pieces of art to Cal Poly Pomona and select pieces are on display at different times of the year. Michele Cairella Fillmore, the new curator and director of the Kellogg University Art Gallery as well as the Huntley Art Gallery led the tour and shared interesting facts about the collection and how Mr. Huntley obtained most of the art work. She told us about future plans for both galleries, and concluded our tour with a visit of a storage area where other pieces of western art are stored. It was an interesting behind the scenes look at the Huntley Gallery.

Members enjoyed the tour so much that many signed up for the Art Gallery mailing, and were enthusiastic about a future event where we could tour both Galleries at the same time.

Scholarship News

A big THANK YOU to everyone who supported our first two Pace Setter Scholarships! Since our presentations at the luncheon meeting in April we almost have enough support for two more scholarshipsl. The winners will be selected late March and announced at the April general meeting.  As a reminder, the scholarships will go to an undergrad or graduate student who has a record of some campus volunteer involvement and a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.  The recipient will be screened by the Financial Aid Office and selected by two Pace Setters, one of whom will be a Board member.

Your general donations to Pace Setters are always welcome and we thank all of you who help out in this way.  If you want your donation to support the Pace Setter Scholarship then when you make your check out to Pace Setters/Cal Poly Pomona Foundation you must indicate “scholarship” on the memo line.  We are looking into ways to raise funds in addition to donations but in the meantime, we appreciate your participation in this effort.

Students interested in applying for a Pace Setters scholarship can contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.
