Physics and its Relevance in the Aerospace Industry

Jeffrey H. Hunt, Ph.D.

The Boeing Company

The Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics, a subsection of the American Physical Society, defines an Industrial Physicist as someone who practices physics by using it to solve pragmatic problems. Personally, I don't understand how you can solve problems without physics, nor am I aware of any physics problems that are unpragmatic. From that reference point, I will discuss a series of "basic" physics problems that I have worked on over my professional career and how the aerospace industry has incorporated that technology. These topics will include nonlinear optics, surface physics, condensed matter, and combustion sciences.

Refreshments at 11:00 AM. Seminar begins at 11:10 AM.
