Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Experimental Biophysics

The Physics and Astronomy Department at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in experimental biophysics, broadly construed including biophotonics, biomaterials, and closely-related areas of material science and condensed matter physics, to begin in August 2018.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach both introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in physics, as well as engage in publishable research involving undergraduate students.  Applicants must obtain a Ph.D. in Physics, Biophysics, or a closely-related field by August 2018.  Previous college teaching experience (at least at the teaching assistant level) and the ability to establish an independent research program are required.  The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and/or service, and be committed to teaching and working in a multicultural environment. The Position:

The new faculty member will teach the full range (from freshman to senior level) of undergraduate courses in physics.  The position requires excellence in teaching and advising, professional and scholarly achievements, and service to the university.  The department has a very successful undergraduate program, with a history of accomplishments in research that involves undergraduates, including interdisciplinary collaborations (on and off campus) and high-quality research published with undergraduate co-authors in prestigious journals.  The mission of the department is undergraduate education; excellent teaching and published research that can involve undergraduates are both expected and supported.

The new faculty member will have the opportunity to work with students pursuing our new degree option in biophysics, and also our new minor in biophysics.  Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and a commitment to diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in physics, biophysics, or a closely related field by August 2018 from an accredited university.
  • University teaching experience (at least at the teaching assistant level).
  • Documented evidence of original scholarship.

 

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching lecture courses as the instructor of record.
  • Experience involving undergraduate students in research.
  • Ability to teach physics courses at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, and particularly junior/senior-level biophysics courses.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to contribute, teach, and engage in a multicultural environment with a diverse student body.

  • a proposed research plan that includes clear descriptions of ways in which undergraduate students can participate;

Three letters of reference will be required of all finalists. A transcript confirming the graduate degree will be required of the person hired.

The Cal Poly Pomona Department of Physics and Astronomy is one of the largest in the CSU, and focuses entirely on undergraduate education, from classroom instruction, to advising, to research.
