Adeline Yoshioka

Winter 2012

3/1/2012

I am nominating: Adeline Yoshioka

Years of Service at Cal Poly: 5

Department: SAITS

Position: Information Technology

Why are you nominating this person?  Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

Ms. Adeline Yoshioka led 7 departments (The Office of Student Life and Cultural Centers, ASI, Advancement, Athletics, Theatre, Music, and Parking, from 3 different divisions (Student Affairs, Advancement, Academic Affairs) and 2 auxiliaries (ASI and Parking)  to analyze-configure-test and then train them, so they can now all use the SAME EMS scheduling system to schedule events on campus.

She deserves this award, because she completed the project ON TIME (even when we added an additional department mid-way through the project) and with GREAT DEDICATION.

Please select 3 of the 6 Division of Student Affairs values for which your nominee best exemplifies:

Interconnectedness, Passion, Quality

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1: Interconnectedness

If you can imagine getting seven departments from three divisions and two auxiliaries to come together and SCHEDULE CAMPUS EVENTS in ONE system, you can imagine the complexity of this project.  Adeline never gave up on helping each, individual member of the team figure out what they needed from the EMS system and then she would help them each configure their own personalized tables to use with the software.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2: Passion

Adeline has a passion for details, as evidenced by what her two supervisors have to say about her.  Kevin Morningstar wrote, "Externally, Adeline’s calm confidence puts people at ease regarding the complexity of the task, and internally, she partners that skill with thoroughness for details and dedication to achieving the desired outcome; this makes for a highly successful combination of skills to have on any project!"  Cathy Bates added, "Adeline utilizes her unique skills of communication and organization which demonstrates our divisional value of integrity.  This enabled her to bring together a diverse community of event schedulers, with varying requirements, into one integrated and interconnected solution for the benefit of students’ ability to engage in campus club and program events.  And she is able to do this with a smile and calmness that puts individuals at ease.  "

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #3: Quality

The quality of Adeline's work is easily described by those that worked with her most closely on this project - ALL 7 DEPARTMENTS responded when I asked if they wanted to support Adeline's STAR nomination.  Here are just a few of their comments: Byron Howlett wrote, “Adeline is one of the most dedicated employees at Cal Poly Pomona.  She has been extremely patient in guiding OSLCC through the learning process of the new EMS Scheduling/Campus Calendaring system.  Adeline is a fresh breath of air.  She has a great sense of humor as well!  Any day I get to work side-by-side with Adeline is a day I look forward to!!  Dora Lee added, “Adeline is highly competent, reliable, patient and flexible.  I spent an entire summer working with her on EMS.  She was so good at guiding Anita, Byron and me through the EMS process.  She made the process manageable, especially for non-techy folks like us!”  Wendy Nasmyth wrote, “Adeline works in a very positive and helpful way. She is willing to devote whatever time necessary in order to achieve a goal.  I enjoyed our training experience together.”Bob Hutchinson added, “Adeline was instrumental in the listing and numbering of all of the campus locations that will be scheduled through the EMS program” and David Quezada agreed when he wrote, “Adeline has been a tremendous resource for ASI’s Conference and Events services. She is very responsive to our needs and very patient with our questions. But most of all, she really translates technical talk into everyday speak we can all understand.”

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?

The final result of Adeline's work on this project (so far!), with these seven departments, is that everyone has what they need and ALL of them can now "see" what spaces and resources are available on campus and what spaces have already been reserved on campus. Each scheduler has the ability to decide if they want their event to appear on the Campus Calendar.  That helps all of us know more about what's happening on campus!  AND... we still have more departments we want to recruit to schedule in EMS, so hopefully you'll be lucky enough to have the opportunity to work with Adeline!
