Why are you nominating this person?  Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

With great pride I’m nominating Ms. Carolina Sanchez for the Star Award due to her consistent dedication to her Department, fellow colleagues, students, and the Academic Departments she serves. As a Cal Poly Pomona Alum she exemplifies the very core values of the Student Affairs Department and the University. She embodies the University’s “learn by doing” philosophy and as a

CPP Graduate Student she continues to strive to advance her education both personally as well as professionally. Ms. Sanchez is a positive representation of the Registrar’s Office, both as a University employee and alumni. Her continued professionalism and supportive to her students’ success, both in academia and life, is a prime example of her own personal qualities. Her personal commitment will exemplify her as a STAR of this University for years to come.

Please select 3 of the 6 Division of Student Affairs values for which your nominee best exemplifies:

Student-Centered Philosophy, Integrity, Interconnectedness

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #1:  Student-Centered Philosophy

As a Cal Poly Pomona alum, Ms. Sanchez clearly understands the issues and stresses her Undergraduate and Graduate students encounter through their academic career; with that personal knowledge and her detailed knowledge of academic programs she is able to advise her students clearly and concisely.

Ms. Sanchez is also able to provide a positive environment that is conducive to students feeling comfortable and at ease. She has always been a good listener, providing a friendly and open approach to communication with her students allowing them to be open with her on their academic progress.  Ms. Sanchez believes in advising her students as individuals and treating their situation as unique, insuring proper guidance and support for each student. She motivates her students to empower themselves to perform at their fullest potential and succeed in achieving their academic goals. Ms. Sanchez understands and believes that her students as well as their fellow students in all Departments are the backbone of the University. Through their academic success her students will continue to be a positive representation of Cal Poly Pomona in their personal and professional lives.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2: Integrity

As a Transfer & Graduation Advisor and with her experiences as an Undergraduate and Graduate student of Cal Poly Pomona, Ms. Sanchez believes integrity is the cornerstone in student advisement and the work she provides. She knows that taking shortcuts, or not providing the necessary information in advisement, can jeopardize the success of a student and undermine the quality of work provided to staff, faculty, and students leading to a poor representation of the Registrar’s Office and the University. Her high degree of honesty and integrity helps guide her students in making the correct decisions regarding their academic progress and helps them put their education in perspective, providing them the ability to mature and develop as they move long in their academic career. As a staff member, she provides her honest opinions on Department procedures and practices to provide ways on increasing efficiency, accuracy, and quality for the Department and those we serve. Her honesty and openness in her thoughts and ideas have provided her colleagues a valuable resource. Ms. Sanchez believes that it does no one any good to provide anyone with less than they require, especially when it means their success or failure in achieving their goals.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #3: Interconnectedness

Ms. Sanchez clearly demonstrates her interconnectedness in her teamwork attitude, both with her colleagues and the Academic Departments she serves. She has worked on several Department committees and has provided a clear perspective as a staff member and alum. Her background is an asset when working closely with her Academic Departments, such as the College of Environmental Design and Collins College of Hospitality Management. She does not hesitate to provide assistance to fellow staff, but I have personally observed her work closely with Academic Advisors, Department Chairs and Deans to ensure academic success and graduation of their students. Due to her strong knowledge of academic programs and Department procedures she is instrumental keeping the University in compliance with the CSU’s Graduation Initiative.  She believes that to ensure student success, all involvement from the Registrar’s Office with Academic Departments needs to be collaborative, creating a cohesive team.

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community? Carolina Sanchez’s has professionalism and commitment in her mission of advising and guiding students towards achieving their educational goals and providing a positive representation of Cal Poly Pomona. Her personal, academic, and professional background with the University assures she voices concerns of staff and Academic Departments and continually works toward the best interest of the students. Recognizing Carolina Sanchez for the STAR AWARD is the least we can do to acknowledge her years of dedicated work and service to Cal Poly Pomona as a Transfer & Graduation Advisor.
