Why are you nominating this person? Why do you think he/she deserves the award?
Jason is being nominated for this award because of his commitment to Student Affairs by demonstrating divisional values in his day to day work. Jason’s work ethic, relationship building skills, and passion for working with students has made Jason an important part of the campus community.
Jason’s role is instrumental to UHS and Cal Poly Pomona; as Area Coordinator, he arranges all after-hour response for the department. Managing the processes that keep 2400 students safe and secure is not an easy job; despite the increase in the number of after-hour calls UHS has experienced, it has not interfered with his ability to complete departmental, divisional, and university tasks/projects. Next to Campus Police, Jason is likely the most called person on campus.
In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?
Jason contributes to Cal Poly’s Campus Community in many ways. Jason has also demonstrated a unique approach to technology and departmental processes- introducing UHS to paperless recruitment processes, a Wiki for Residence Life Information, and maintaining Residence Life’s blog, an interactive way for Residence Life Team candidates to get to know UHS’s Residence Life Department.
Jason also has a firm belief in bringing a “Town and Gown” relationship to Cal Poly Pomona, and has been successful in collaborating with local businesses to work with our student leaders. Under his advisement, Welcome Week’s Leadership Team showcased their first Vendor Fair, inviting over 15 local businesses to showcase their services to UHS Residents.

Jason exemplifies interconnectedness through his relationships with other campus partners to maintain a safe and secure environment for UHS’s 2400 residents. To do this, Jason connects with many staff members, students, and parents around the topics of safety, security, and emergency response. Jason’s knack for keeping calm under extreme pressure has helped both staff and parents in time of crisis.
This year, he was tasked with chairing Homecoming’s Publicity Committee. Thanks to his efforts, more than 5,000 people attended Homecoming Weekend. To do this, Jason utilized his skill of connection to work with various campus partners to publicize this event, including Alumni Affairs, Public Affairs, and the President’s Office.
For the past two years, Jason has been part of the WACUHO (Western Association of College and University Housing Administrators) executive board. During his time, he has provided resources and guidance to WACUHO committees and provided a voice for Cal Poly Pomona within housing’s professional organization.

Jason exemplifies quality through providing first rate programs that exceed expectations. During his time at UHS, Jason has been part of many initiatives that have gone above and beyond- including Professional Staff Recruitment, Welcome Week.
As Professional Staff Recruitment Chair, Jason has introduced unique twists to the recruitment effort, including engaging candidates through Google Hangouts and video based questions. As Welcome Week Advisor, Jason guided the Welcome Week Leadership Team through their largest Welcome Week yet (with over 1000 attendees) and created an online payment process that attendees were not able to use in the past. He challenged his students to think out of the box and provide new types of programming for incoming students. Attendees benefitted by experiencing new events, such as lunch with the Colleges, and a local vendor fair.
