Why are you nominating this person?  Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

Dr. Tsai has proven himself to be a leader and dedicated practitioner.  In addition to being and excellent physician, he constantly goes above and beyond to improve services for students and to ensure that the best quality care is provided.

Please select 3 of the 6 Division of Student Affairs values for which your nominee best exemplifies:

Student-Centered Philosophy, Integrity, Quality

Plese share how your nominee exemplifies value #1:

After a long day, it is not unusual for folks to exit the clinic quickly after all the patients have left so that the alarms can be set.  John is the type of caring physician who when he was driving past the clinic on his way home and noticed a young woman approach the front stairs, turned his car around and pulled over to check on her and make sure she was not in need of medical attention.  This "above and beyond" attitude is a constant with Dr. Tsai. It is not unusual for Dr. Tsai to work through his lunch in order to see patients and make sure they are able to get back to classes.  When the clinic gets a late afternoon rush, it is also not unusual for John to stay late to help the urgent care physician close out the cases.  When Dr. Tsai noticed we were not an approved provider of the Yellow Fever vaccine (something many of our students need when they travel abroad), he took it upon himself to take the continuing education courses and acquire the CDC certification so that he could administer the vaccinations to our students. In doing so he have saved students time and money and expanded our services.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2:

Dr. Tsai holds himself and his colleagues to the highest moral and ethical standards.  He is not shy in completing incident reports to make sure our standard of care and service are not compromised and that we can learn from our mistakes.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #3:

As chair of the SHS Quality Management and Improvement (QMI) committee, Dr. Tsai is constantly seeking new ways to improve the quality and efficiency of our services. His willingness to ask the tough questions and his commitment to follow through has elevated the quality of Student Health Services.

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?:

Dr. John Tsai is the consummate professional.  He is always looking for ways to improve our staffing, training, policies and practices. He offers solutions to problems others have yet to identify and never seeks recognition or praise.
