I am nominating:Joseph Gallegos
Years of Service at Cal Poly: 20
Department: ASI Facilities Management
Position: Custodial Services Coordinator
Why are you nominating this person? Why do you think he/she deserves the award?
Joe is one of the hardest working, most dedicated staff on campus. With the support of his two Custodial Leads and 23 student staff, he ensures that ASI’s buildings are some of the top destinations on campus. As of September 2014, with the added responsibility of maintaining the BRIC, Joe has never wavered in delivering his high standards for both of ASI’s buildings. His attention to detail is impressive and he does not settle for anything short of excellent. Every day, he comes to work with a positive attitude and a smile delivering superb customer service. He consistently recruits some of the best CPP students with his same keen attention to detail, empowers them to take pride in their work and be self-motivated, developing them into reliable and high performing employees.
In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?
Joe consistently strives to provide the most presentable, inviting ASI facilities while balancing his role as supervisor, role model and mentor to the team of students executing the department’s operations on the front-line.
280,000 square feet is a lot of mixed use and specialized facilities to maintain, but when you’re Joe Gallegos and you have a team composed primarily of CPP students (with the exception of two fantastic lead staff) there is no intimidation factor.

If you have been inside the BRIC or the BSC recently, they both have Joe’s “signature” throughout, but don’t expect him to ever take full or even partial credit for the presentation of these buildings. He is intent on ensuring that his student staff feel valued and that it is reflected in their work. When his stellar students are recruited by other ASI departments or for opportunities with the University, he is always supportive and promotes them to continue to learn and grow knowing that there are other students with the same potential just waiting for the opportunity to shine.
Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2:
One of Joe's most notable characteristics is his integrity. It is apparent in how he leads him team and the pride he takes in his work. Joe and his team require little oversight because of his open and honest communications with ASI department managers. After 20 years of service, his commitment to his role, ASI and the Cal Poly Pomona community are stronger than ever.
