LaKisha Torrence

Spring 2014

I am nominating:LaKisha Torrence
Years of Service at Cal Poly:10
Department:Disability Resource Center
Position:Assistant to the Director
Why are you nominating this person? Why do you think he/she deserves the award?

I can think of no one more deserving than Lakisha Torrence to receive the DSA star award. I feel fortunate to have her as my colleague, and there are many of days I do not know what the DRC would do without her! Although quiet and humble, Lakisha has truly blossomed in her role as Assistant to the Director, and has steadily made operational improvements to the DRC that benefit both students and staff. Lakisha is dependable (usually the first to arrive and the last to leave), has a stellar work ethic, and is willing to accept any task that is assigned. Lakisha’s leadership skills are constantly evolving and improving, and she has the respect of the staff, student assistants and DRC students. Lakisha is always taking on new projects and seeking to expand her responsibilities, all for the betterment of the students and the department. Since moving over from Student Health, Lakisha has pushed herself, outside of her comfort zone at times, and she has really flourished. The DRC is a better department because of her leadership, positive attitude and overall contributions. We are lucky to have her!

In what way(s) does this person enhance or contribute to the Cal Poly Pomona campus community?

Lakisha is committed to our students and DRC staff. Lakisha has made tremendous contributions in improving the efficiency of services provided to students with disabilities, which directly benefit the campus community. Through her efforts students are being seen much quicker and provided their accommodations sooner, leading to increase success in the classroom. Lakisha is tasked with working with most DRC staff members, whether for staffing, payroll, etc., but her easy demeanor and patience with everyone does not go unnoticed. She takes the time to make everyone feel important and is committed to find the answer to any problem that might arise. Additionally, Lakisha is always willing to step up if faculty have specific questions or need specific problems addressed quickly. She is thoughtful and respectful to all those she comes in contact with, and I feel especially honored to have the opportunity to work with someone like Lakisha. It is often those who are quiet and committed that often get overlooked, but in Lakisha’s case I could not think of anyone more deserving of a Star Award.

Lakisha is tasked with the difficulty of coordinating many of the day to day operations of the DRC, but her integrity allows her to meet the demands of our students, faculty and staff. Lakisha wears many hats within the DRC and is often juggling many tasks at once. However, she is thorough in her decision making and is always willing to seek out additional help if she feels like it will assist in making informed decisions. Lakisha leads by example and is respected by her peers. While not the most vocal, Lakisha often sits back and evaluates, and speaks up when she feels her input can benefit the department. This makes her words even more powerful and respected. In an office with many moving parts, Lakisha is the calm. She centers the department even in the most difficult of scenarios. She leads by example and maintains her professionalism at all times. She is committed to doing what is right and is respected by all those who work in and utilize the DRC.

Please share how your nominee exemplifies value #2:

Lakisha exemplifies quality by providing first rate service to both the students and staff of the DRC. Since becoming the Assistant to the Director, Lakisha continues to take on more and more to benefit DRC students and staff. Starting last spring Lakisha became the case manager for all new DRC student intakes. She streamlined the intake process of all new DRC students. Through her commitment to providing services quickly, DRC students are now able to make appointments on the same day rather than the past two to three week wait time. Lakisha is dependable and I know she will always do a good job with whatever task is assigned. She has had a steep learning curve since her transition to the DRC but her quality work has always been top notch. She goes above and beyond and is an integral part of everything that the DRC does.
